The best running motivation apps in 2026

Motivation apps work in different ways: a story, a coach’s voice, a plan to follow or friends watching. Pick the one that matches why you skip runs.

I make Motivator, so read its entry with that in mind. Every other app is described from its own App Store listing. Ratings are from the US App Store on 20 October 2026 and will have moved since.

The short answer

  • If running feels boring: Zombies, Run!
  • If you quit when it gets hard: Motivator, for a coach that reacts mid-run.
  • If you're starting from zero: C25K or None to Run.
  • If you need people to answer to: Strava.
  • If you want free guided runs: Nike Run Club.

The apps

Zombies, Run!

Best for: runners who are bored, not tired.
App Store: 4.79 from 24,124 ratings. View on the App Store

Every run is a mission. A story plays through your headphones, with over 500 missions across 11 seasons, co-created by novelist Naomi Alderman. It works at any pace, including walking and on a treadmill.

Watch out for: it's entertainment first. It isn't trying to coach your pace or build fitness to a plan.

Motivator: AI Running Coach

Best for: the moment you want to slow down or stop.
App Store: new in 2026, no US ratings yet. View on the App Store

Seven coaches with different personalities, from a drill sergeant to a calm guide, who speak when something happens on your run: a split, a pace drop, a hill, the final stretch. Reminders before the run come in each coach’s voice too, such as Sarge’s “Your sofa requested another rest day. Request denied. Shoes on.” Free to download. Tracking, plans, history, Apple Health and coaching in an on-device voice stay free, with three runs in the coaches’ own voices. Premium (USD 4.99 a week, 14.99 a month or 99.99 a year) adds the coaches’ own voices on every run.

Watch out for: iPhone only, with no Apple Watch app yet.

Nike Run Club

Best for: free guided runs with real coaches.
App Store: 4.77 from 419,784 ratings. View on the App Store

Hundreds of guided runs recorded by Nike coaches and athletes, plus free training plans. Many runners credit the guided runs with getting them started.

Watch out for: every guided run is a fixed recording, so the coach can't react if your run is going badly.

Strava

Best for: accountability through friends and clubs.
App Store: 4.81 from 378,125 ratings. View on the App Store

Strava turns your runs into a social feed. Kudos, clubs and segments give you a reason to show up, especially if friends use it.

Watch out for: it records and shares; it doesn't coach you during the run. Comparing yourself to faster friends can also put people off.

C25K 5K Running Coach

Best for: complete beginners who want a clear programme.
App Store: 4.77 from 171,448 ratings. View on the App Store

The official Couch to 5K programme: three sessions a week of alternating walking and running, building to a continuous 5K over about nine weeks, with audio prompts for each switch.

Watch out for: the plan is fixed. If a week is too hard, you repeat it rather than the plan adapting.

None to Run

Best for: beginners for whom Couch to 5K starts too fast.
App Store: 4.82 from 5,166 ratings. View on the App Store

Plans designed for people who find even walking for 30 minutes hard, building gently to a 5K and beyond.

Watch out for: focused on beginners; experienced runners will outgrow it.

Pace: Running Motivation

Best for: a mantra on your lock screen and wrist.
App Store: new, no ratings yet. View on the App Store

A daily running mantra in a widget, plus mile-specific lines buzzed to your Apple Watch during a run.

Watch out for: text on a screen rather than a voice, and very new.

What actually keeps people running

No app will run for you. The habits that keep most people going are small: agree to ten minutes rather than a full run, run most sessions at an easy pace you could talk at, and decide your running days in advance so you're not deciding every morning. There is more on this in how to stay motivated to run.
