Motivator guides

Nike Run Club alternatives for guided runs

Nike’s guided runs are free and well made, and they got a lot of people running. Their limit is that a recording can't hear you. These apps either react to your run or offer a different kind of company.

I make Motivator, so read its entry with that in mind. Every other app is described from its own App Store listing. Ratings are from the US App Store on 20 October 2026 and will have moved since.

What guided runs can and can't do

A Nike guided run is a fixed audio track. The coach talks at set times whether you're flying or walking up a hill. Runners in long-running Reddit threads about the feature like the voices and the company, and wish the coach knew how their run was going. That gap is what live voice coaching apps try to close: they read your pace, splits or heart rate and speak in response.

The alternatives

Motivator: AI Running Coach

Choose from seven coaches, each with their own voice and personality: Sarge the drill sergeant, Maya the supportive friend, Josh the playful coach, Kai the elite coach, Maeve the calm guide, Colin from mission control and Wade the fantasy narrator. Lines are written for the moment, using your split pace, your usual pace and how far you are from the finish. You can replay every coach moment after the run. Free to download. Tracking, plans, history, Apple Health and coaching in an on-device voice stay free, with three runs in the coaches’ own voices. Premium (USD 4.99 a week, 14.99 a month or 99.99 a year) adds the coaches’ own voices on every run.

App Store: 4.79 from 24,124 ratings. View on the App Store

If what you loved about guided runs was having something to listen to, a zombie story with over 500 missions is a different kind of company.

GPS tracking, goals and audio-guided workouts from ASICS coaches.

Which one?

If you want the closest thing to a Nike guided run that changes with your run, try Motivator. If you train by heart rate with a watch, try Kyde. If you want to keep it free, Nike Run Club is still a good app; pair it with our running pace calculator to set targets.
